Artist’s statement


Helena Godwin has worked as a community artist since 1990,making exhibiting and selling her own carvings, as well as, teaching, running workshops, play schemes, festivals etc. she works with all ages and abilities

Helena is passionate about making art. Like exercise, everyone should be encouraged to be creative on a regular basis.

Helena enjoyed studying art for 4 years, but found it difficult to find a medium for her ideas after leaving the sanctuary of Exeter Art College in 1986. She became increasingly unhappy, until she started carving in 1991.

Helena enquired about attending an A level sculpture evening class at her local school and ended up as unofficial artist in residence for 10 years. In this time she was able study good studio practice and develop her own very distinctive style of carving in wood and stone. Stoke Park school Coventry; art department was a centre of excellence at A level run by a sculptor George Wagstaff.

Learning to carve enabled Helena to finally express herself and she has been carving in her garden for twenty years.

In the last 3 or 4 years Helena has become interested in using other materials and techniques such as wax and withys. This is partly due to her connection with trinity school and Sheri Horn.
